If You Care About Jobs, Fix Our Broken Tax System Now!

Mr. President and Members of Congress:
If You Care About Jobs,
FIX OUR BROKEN TAX SYSTEM NOW!
Here’s how:

  • Renew all expiring tax rates and incentives right away.
This would immediately infuse our weak recovery with a big boost in confidence and certainty, spurring business expansion, consumer spending, and job creation. Politics may tell you to wait until year’s end—but Americans need your action now.
  • Stop threatening small businesses with higher taxes.
95% of American businesses pay their taxes under individual income tax rates. These businesses employ more than half of our workforce. Letting the 2001 and 2003 tax rates expire would punish America’s most successful entrepreneurs and kill jobs.
  • Make our companies and workers more globally competitive.
Our corporate tax rate is the highest in the world. Cut it. We’re the only major economy that imposes double taxes on our companies’ foreign earnings. Stop it. Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom are cutting their tax rates. We need a globally competitive tax code to bring capital, investment, and jobs back to the USA.
  • Pass comprehensive, pro-growth tax reform.
The U.S. tax code is an incomprehensible mess. It takes Americans a combined 6.1 billion hours a year to comply with the law and file their returns. Taxpayers deserve a system that is simple and clear, one that spurs growth, encourages investment and innovation, and efficiently generates revenues to reduce the deficit and meet our national priorities.
  • Unite us. Don’t divide us.
The top 1% of income earners pay 40% of federal income taxes while 50% of Americans don’t pay any federal income taxes at all. Politicians who play fast and loose with these facts and divide Americans by class are letting our country down. We cannot lift one group of Americans up by dragging another group down. Bring us together around a positive program to grow our economy and expand opportunities for all Americans. We always do better when we work together!

Tax reform is a key pillar of the U.S. Chamber’s Jobs and Growth Agenda. To learn about our other ideas to create American jobs now, visit www.uschamber.com/jobs.
