U.S. Community Service Award: 2006 Finalists
The U.S. Community Service Award honors a business, an accredited local chamber of commerce or trade association for a specific community service program in the U.S. that contributes to better business and society relations.
ArvinMeritor, Inc.
ArvinMeritor is being recognized for its collaboration with Detroit's Southwestern High School. The company has supported the creation of a new performing arts center, football field, track, softball fields, tennis courts, as well as a mentoring program and a $10,000 scholarship fund for pursuit of careers in technology, science and engineering fields.
Independence (Missouri) Chamber of Commerce
The Independence Chamber is being recognized for its work with CHOICES, a program targeted at keeping kids in school. Independence Chamber volunteers have reached more than 10,000 students in three school districts through the CHOICES program, and since the program's implementation in 2001, dropout rates in the Independence School District have been reduced by 26 percent.
The McGraw-Hill Companies
McGraw-Hill is being recognized for its Writers to the Rescue program, which provides expert, volunteer writers, editors, and communication and public relations specialists to nonprofit organizations.
Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley is being recognized for providing expertise, manpower and financial resources to strengthen New York–Presbyterian Hospital. The company recently launched a loaned executive program and a year-round employee volunteer initiative to leverage employees' skills and resources to help deliver quality healthcare to children, particularly the underserved.
Union Pacific
Union Pacific is being recognized for its Principal's Partnership program that offers professional development opportunities to principals at no cost. This year alone, the program is expected to reach 71,000 teachers and 1 million students.
