Labor, Business Unite to Rebuild America’s Transportation System

U.S. Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue announces the FasterBetterSafer campaign.

Business, labor, and transportation leaders came together in Washington, D.C., on June 23 to launch the FasterBetterSafer campaign, a grassroots effort aimed at putting pressure on leaders across the nation to increase transportation infrastructure funding.

Tom Donohue, Chamber president and CEO; Terence O’Sullivan, general president of the Laborers’ International Union of North America; and Dr. T. Peter Ruane, president and CEO of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association each stressed that the nation’s transportation infrastructure must be significantly upgraded to keep pace with a growing population and economy.

An inefficient transportation system puts a “ceiling on economic growth,” endangers American lives, and wastes copious amounts of energy on a daily basis, Donohue told the audience at the National Press Foundation.

The campaign’s immediate priority is to ensure that Congress passes the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill this week. The bill includes a provision that would transfer $8 billion from the general fund to the Highway Trust Fund for immediate road repairs and upkeep.
