Delaware
State Has Lowest Tax Burden-
Delaware has the lowest business tax burden, according to an annual study by the Council on State Taxation. Delaware business taxes came in at 3.5% compared with the national average of 5%.

Florida
Sales Tax Expansion Up For Vote-
Despite strong business opposition, Floridians will vote in November on swapping an average 25% property-tax cut for an increase and possible expansion of the state sales tax. The proposal would reduce homeowner levies while increasing the existing 6% sales tax by another 1%.

Nevada
Small Business Hiring Drops Off-
Small companies across the state have put the brakes on hiring in the first quarter. According to a SurePayroll survey, the average number of employees among small companies in the state dropped 0.8%, compared with a 0.9% gain in small business staffs nationwide.

Ohio
Governor Pushes Jobs Bill-
Gov. Ted Strickland (D) is drumming up support for his new bipartisan $1.57 billion jobs stimulus package. The jobs package would provide $250 million for internships and programs to keep Ohio college graduates in the state, among other measures. It passed the Senate in December.

Wyoming
Oil Production Increases-
For the second straight year, Wyoming oil fields recorded increased production. In 2007, oil production in the state hit 54 million barrels, an increase of 1 million barrels, or 2%, over 2006, making it the seventh-largest oil-producing state in the nation.
