International Role, Responsibility, & Coordination of U.S. Regulatory Agencies

Many U.S. regulatory agencies were created and given mandates by statute decades before the rise of global markets and sophisticated supply chains. Therefore, it is time to rethink the international roles, responsibilities and coordination of these agencies. These agencies are responsible for protecting U.S. consumers, investors, workers, and the environment, and today’s interconnected global economy demands greater international engagement and action to fulfill that mission.

• U.S. regulators should better understand how divergent, market-distorting, and overly burdensome regulatory policies in world markets impact the competitiveness of U.S. businesses.

• U.S. regulators should be empowered to advocate for better regulation in cooperation with their international counterparts in order to help foster U.S. export growth.

• Inter-agency coordination and communication must be improved, with a focus on developing comprehensive strategies to address bilateral regulatory challenges with our trading partners.

• U.S. technical assistance and foreign aid in support of economic development should be directed at developing coherent regulatory frameworks
