Corporations, Chambers, and Charters: How Businesses Can Support High-Quality Public Charter Schools (pdf, October 2008) Given both the promise of charter schools and the urgent need to foster higher quality in the charter school sector, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for a Competitive Workforce commissioned this guide to outline how business can support charter schools. This guide captures recent developments in the charter sector and the advice of business leaders, leading donors, and partners on how businesspeople and chamber leaders can support high-quality charter schools, both in their local communities and on a national scale. Private philanthropy has been investing in the charter school movement from the beginning. This guide builds on the lessons philanthropists (including successful business leaders) have learned that will be particularly applicable to the business community.

To the former National Governors Association (NGA) Chair, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, 2007 has been the year of Innovation. For her NGA Chair's initiative, she launched Innovation America to promote innovation in each state and across the nation. "To be competitive as a nation, we must prepare our young people to meet the real demands of the job market," said Gov. Napolitano.
ICW has forged a new partnership with Governor Napolitano. To support her work, we have just released Innovation America: A Public-Private Partnership. This new publication is a guide for business on how to work with state leaders to support and promote innovation at the regional and state levels. Governor Napolitano has spent the year working with other Governors to help them understand how they can implement policies and programs that will foster innovation in their states. Her Chairmanship has ended, but she will continue her work through the Innovation America Foundation. The report includes a 10 point list for business engagement in innovation and specific examples of how different states have implemented innovation initiatives. For more information on how you can support innovation where you live and do business, download the report here. (PDF, Fall 2007)

This new study grades the performance of the 50 states and Washington, DC on their K-12 school systems. In a state-by-state assessment of education systems, we found there is not a single state in the country where a majority of students are proficient in reading or math. One-third of all 9th graders will not graduate in four years--almost half of all minority students will not. At least 40% of our students enrolling in college have to take at least one remedial course when they get there.
