Activities to Watch

100 Chambers Participate in Employer Survey

100 chambers are collaborating with CWP to gather 10,000 business responses about perceptions of the public workforce system.  Major findings from the survey will be announced in early spring 2003.  Results will be used to inform policymakers about employers' workforce development needs.  The survey is being funded by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) with a supplemental grant from the Joyce Foundation.  For more information, contact Scott Cheney at 202-887-3441 or scheney@uschamber.com

"Workforce Solutions:  Building the Job Corps Connection"

CWP's 2003 revised toolkit,  "Workforce Solutions:  Building the Job Corps Connection," will be available free in January to all chambers of commerce that are members of the U.S. Chamber.  This multimedia CD toolkit on creating productive workforce partnerships features Job Corps' new Career Development Success System, which will help provide the kind of skilled entry-level worker your members want and need.  By building Job Corps connections, chambers can strengthen their leadership role in developing its future workforce.  The CD is a perfect presentation to your workforce, economic development, and/or education committees.  Order your copy by downloading the CWP order form or contacting Jan Magill at 202-822-2471 or jmagill@uschamber.com.

CWP Participates in Distinguished National Forums

CWP Director Beth B. Buehlmann will participate in two distinguished national workforce forums—The American Assembly and the Annual Forbes Executive Women's Forum.  The assembly, affiliated with Columbia University was founded in 1950 by Dwight Eisenhower, the university's president at the time, is a non-partisan, national public affairs forum.  Buehlmann joins 65 national leaders in exploring the role of workforce intermediaries in meeting the challenges facing workers and employers.

The invitation-only executive woman's forum brings together top-level female executives from Fortune 500 companies.  She will speak on a panel focusing on profitable investments in low-income communities, which benefit the corporation and community alike.

DOL to Expand WINs

CWP will receive $1.5 million over the next three years from the DOL to extend and broaden the WINs initiative.  The Workforce Innovation Networks, a partnership with Jobs for the Future and the National Association of Manufacturers, assists chambers to fill their roles as workforce intermediaries, helping employers understand and use the public workforce development system.  Work will include identifying policy changes needed to make the system more relevant to employers and expanding the number of demonstration sites.  Building on the success of the November 2002 WINS Showcase, the WINs/DOL initiative will hold a Showcase Conference and Skills Supply Chain training on October 1-3, 2003.  Hold the date.
