Meet Nancy Pool...
How are you currently involved with Institute?
I am honored to serve as chairman of the Board of Regents for Southeast Institute at the University of Georgia.
What would be your ideal location for Institute? Why?
Why try to improve on perfection? My ideal location for Institute is the University of Georgia. Athens Georgia attracts fun, dedicated Chamber professionals. Southeast is the longest running Institute for good reason: Athens provides a marvelous atmosphere conducive for learning and networking.
What do you like most about volunteering at Institute?
Volunteering at Institute provides the opportunity to learn the latest generation techniques, most up-to-date information from the best and brightest professionals. Enthusiasm and excitement permeate the atmosphere and provides a long-serving chamber exec motivation and relevancy.
What is your favorite course at institute? Why?
I do not have a 'favorite' course at Institute; however, I always try to catch one of Kip Lilly's sessions. Institute without a 'Kip-fix' is like the beach without sunshine.
What is your profession when not involved with Institute?
In my real job, I serve as President of the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce in South Boston, Virginia, a position I have held for twenty-eight years.
What are some of your favorites? (Movies, animals, hobbies, etc)
Other than my daughter, Salli, my son, David, and my two grandsons, Michael and Matt, my favorite things are my two dogs, Max and Lucky. My husband and I adopted them after a friend found them abandoned when they were about two weeks old. They were covered with mange and had to be fed mother's replacement milk. They are brothers although Max resembles a black and white potbelly pig and Lucky is taller, slender and looks like a yellow and white hound dog. We believe their mother's morals were less than perfect. They are the center of our lives and provide us with more love and entertainment than anyone can imagine.
I have entertained the thought of entering them in the Westminster Dog Show, but my friends believe the judges would not find them attractive. I am considering finding new friends.
If you could vacation in any spot in the world, where would it be? Why?
A perfect vacation would be anywhere that is relaxing, warm, sunny and serves delicious food and chilled beverages. I love to travel and my favorite trips have provided wonderful memories filled with very different experiences. I do love to visit new places where I can learn the history, experience the culture and taste the cuisine.
Where do you live?
My home is South Boston, Virginia, located in south central Virginia bordering North Carolina. Also home of NASCAR driver Jeff Burton.
Anything else you would like to share?
Serving on the Board of Regents is an unbelievable accomplishment for me considering where I began. My chamber career began in Halifax County VA in 1980 when the first fulltime chamber office was opened. Fortunately the board had the wisdom to send me to Institute in 1981. When I walked into the Georgia Center I did not know another person, I did not understand what a real Chamber was. Needless to say, Institute was a life changing experience for me both personally and professionally. The Halifax County Chamber has grown from 94 people who were individual members in 1980 to 425 members employing over 11,000 currently. The Chamber was Accredited for the first time in 1996 and has been reaccredited this past summer as a five star Chamber. It has been a wile ride that has enriched my life and given me the greatest friends anyone could ever find.
