IP

Intellectual Property

The Chamber in 2004 began actively collaborating with the Chinese government at the national, provincial, and municipal levels with the aim of assisting authorities in their work to improve China's protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPR).  At the national level, the Chamber is providing constructive input as China reforms its IP regulatory framework by engaging in substantive dialogue with officials and by submitting written comments on draft legislation such as the "Draft Third Amendment to the Patent Law."  The Chamber is also focused on advocating for additional police resources for enforcement and encouraging heightened Chinese public awareness of the importance of IPR protection and enforcement.

The Chamber's China IPR Initiative includes extensive cooperative efforts in China's provinces.  In 2007, the Chamber will return to Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces for the third year to strengthen ongoing collaboration on IP matters.  In Jiangsu province, the Chamber will implement a recently signed MOU with IP officials, which includes the establishment of a formal IP working group and a benchmarking program to measure IP enforcement progress, as well as continued IP enforcement seminars.  The Chamber will work this year to establish a similar MOU with IP authorities in Guangdong province and conduct additional IP best practices and capacity building seminars.
