Trade 101

International trade is an essential part of our national and local economies. Did you know:

  • Trade generates more than a quarter of our GDP.
  • 97% of exporters are small businesses, and exports directly support 12 million jobs, and indirectly support millions of other jobs.
  • Imports keep inflation low and expand consumer choice and quality.
  • Foreign companies in the United States directly employ 5.1 million Americans and support millions more indirectly.

Yet, trade is often misunderstood and misrepresented. The U.S. Chamber's TradeRoots program is dedicated to raising public awareness of international trade on a local level.

State-by-State Information

This state-by-state TradeRoots report shows the enormous benefits of the international marketplace for each state economy. Embracing international trade has bolstered the economic prosperity of companies from all 50 states. Nearly every state in the country exported at least a billion dollars worth of goods to markets overseas. These exports create thousands of jobs as local export-oriented businesses work to fulfill customers’ orders around the world.

Faces of Trade

To truly understand the benefits of international trade, it helps to hear from small businesses currently succeeding in the global marketplace. Because small businesses make up the vast majority of our membership, the U.S. Chamber is uniquely positioned to share these stories.
