How can we distribute TAMIFLU?
The method of distributing TAMIFLU to employees is specific to each company’s pandemic plan. Each company should consider the merits/challenges of each option before making a final determination. Nevertheless, there are two questions that should be addressed by the organization in order to determine the optimal method of distributing TAMIFLU to its employees:
- Should my company centralize the storage of TAMIFLU or distribute directly to employees?
- When should my organization make TAMIFLU available to employees?
- Should my company (a) maintain the storage of TAMIFLU in one or several locations or (b) distribute directly to employees?
- Maintain the storage of TAMIFLU
An organization can store product at the following locations:
- Company clinic, physician’s office, retail pharmacy, community clinic, mail-order pharmacy, or distributor
Note: There may be other options not listed above
- An organization can store product at the aforementioned locations as long as the entity meets the following criteria:
- Has a DEA number
- Has on file a controlled substances registration (CSR
- Adheres to TAMIFLU product storage requirements
- Adheres to storage guidelines of United States Pharmacopeia (USP)
- Has sufficient and appropriate storage based on order quantity and distribution plan
- Distribute directly to employees
A company can coordinate the distribution of TAMIFLU at a predetermined pandemic event phase with the assistance of a distribution partner. Distributors/wholesalers, mail-order pharmacies and corporate healthcare providers are some of the organizations that may be able to assist your organization in distributing product directly to your employees.
- When should my organization make TAMIFLU available to employees?
The decision as to when an organization should distribute is specific to each company’s pandemic plan. However, some illustrative options are listed below:
- Immediately upon receipt of the TAMIFLU order.
- When public health officials declare that a specific phase of the pandemic has been reached (please refer to http://www.who.org/ for the current pandemic phase)
- When certain event-triggers are met in accordance with your company’s pandemic plan
