E&E Committee Meeting on Climate Change
On April 17, 2007, the U.S. Chamber's Environment & Energy Committee held its spring meeting, entitled "Perspectives on Climate Change." The meeting was led by Committee Chairman Dwight H. Evans of Southern Company, and consisted of morning and afternoon panels featuring energy policy experts, industry representatives, legislators and lawyers discussing in great depth the issue of climate change. Speaking at the morning session were Raymond J. Kopp of Resources for the Future, Kevin Leahy of Duke Energy, Dr. Robert J. Shapiro of Sonecon LLC, and Fredrick D. Palmer of Peabody Energy. Our lunch speaker was Russell S. Frye of FryeLaw PLLC, the attorney who represented the CO2 Litigation Group (which included the U.S. Chamber) in the Massachusetts v. EPA case before the United States Supreme Court.
At the afternoon panel, assembled in conjunction with the Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth (AEEG), the following CEOs of major industry associations offered their perspectives on climate change: Skip Bowman, Nuclear Energy Institute; Red Cavaney, American Petroleum Institute; Jack Gerard, American Chemistry Council; Thomas Kuhn, Edison Electric Institute; J. Stephen Larkin, Aluminum Association; Kraig Naasz, National Mining Association; and David Parker, American Gas Association. The committee meeting concluded with remarks by its keynote speaker, the Honorable Joe L. Barton (R-TX), U.S. House of Representatives.
