Intellectual Property (IP)
Policy Priorities for 2012
Raise awareness and increase support among key audiences for the value of strong IP rights in the United States and abroad.
- Promote and deliver pro-IP messages to key audiences and proactively counter anti-IP rhetoric by (1) building and maintaining alliances and recruiting new voices to create and deliver pro-IP messages to Congress and the administration and (2) proactively promoting pro-IP messages while providing time-sensitive and effective responses to anti-IP rhetoric and policies through strategic communications campaigns.
- Internationally promote and clarify the role of IP rights in developing innovative and creative economies by (1) building alliances and recruiting new voices, (2) establishing and promoting a platform to proactively disseminate pro-IP messages, (3) countering international efforts to undermine IP rights, and (4) enhancing industry engagement in multilateral organizations.
Strengthen the protection and enforcement of IP rights in the United States.
- Reduce the sale of counterfeit goods and piracy of copyright works online, beginning with enactment of rogue sites legislation and enhanced criminal penalties for illegally streaming copyrighted content.
- Secure dedicated resources for IP enforcement and the enactment of legislation that improves the effectiveness of the U.S. IP enforcement agencies.
- Promote legislation that strengthens IP rules and enforcement, and provides additional resources for IP enforcement. Counter efforts to undermine IP via regulations and legislation in the United States.
Promote strong IP protection and enforcement regimes abroad.
- Advance strong IP protection and enforcement through trade mechanisms, with a primary focus on securing the highest levels of IP protection in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
- Strengthen current enforcement of and future foundation for intellectual property rights in China and India.
- Encourage Canada to bring its IP protection and enforcement regime into the 21st century.

Monitor other priority markets (i.e., Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Turkey) in order to keep our members informed of key developments and to be in a position to engage in IP issues of significant concern.
