U.S. Chamber Recognizes White House Leadership on Cybersecurity

Businesses Point to Partnerships as Key to Enhanced Security

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today welcomed the White House’s release of its cybersecurity legislative proposal to help ensure the security, reliability, and resilience of the United States’ communications and information infrastructure.

“Our members are constantly striving to stay a step ahead of cybercriminals and safeguard potentially sensitive consumer and business information,” said Ann Beauchesne, the Chamber’s vice president of National Security and Emergency Preparedness. “President Obama has made cybersecurity a top priority since the start of his administration, and this proposal represents the latest in a series of important actions since the release of his Cyberspace Policy Review.”

“The White House proposal contains elements for addressing the cybersecurity of our citizens, national infrastructure, and the government’s information systems,” Beauchesne said. “Voluntary collaboration between government and business must be the basis for protecting the nation’s economic and national security. With the private sector owning and operating the majority of our nation’s vital infrastructure, government and business leaders increasingly share a responsibility to defend our networks and computers.”

The Chamber is analyzing the cybersecurity proposal and its impact on the business community. “While we may not agree on every aspect of the proposal, the Chamber looks forward to productive engagement with the White House and Congress to strengthen our economy and protect the nation’s security,” Beauchesne said.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
