U.S. Chamber Disappointed with Immigration Proposal

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President of Labor, Immigration, and Employee Benefits Randel K. Johnson issued the following statement on the immigration proposal drafted by Senators Reid, Schumer, and Menendez:

"The U.S. Chamber of Commerce continues to call for rational and balanced comprehensive immigration reform that includes stronger border security, expanded temporary worker programs, a national electronic employment verification program, and a pathway to earned legal status for certain undocumented workers. We recognize that there are many opportunities to find common ground on immigration reform, however, we are disappointed with the draft proposal today issued by Senators Reid, Schumer, and Menendez. While the outline addresses several of the Chamber's priorities, it appears to have serious substantive problems in several critical areas. Nevertheless, we look forward to working with all interested parties to move this process forward in the hope that sound bipartisan legislation can eventually be enacted."

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
