U.S. Chamber's Kavinoky Comments on Congress' Failure to Reauthorize Highway Trust Fund

WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Chamber of Commerce Director of Transportation and Infrastructure Janet Kavinoky made the following statement on Congress' failure to extend the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act - A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) before the federal highway, safety, truck safety and portions of federal transit programs shut down at midnight on Sunday:

"The U.S. Chamber is deeply disappointed that the House and Senate failed to extend SAFETEA-LU at FY 2009 levels through December 31, 2010. We call on Congress to pass legislation to achieve this long-term extension and send it to the President's desk as soon as possible. The shutdown of the Federal Highway Program means that thousands of jobs are at risk."

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
