U.S. Chamber Calls Trade Vote on Africa
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Chamber of Commerce hailed today's passage of the African – Caribbean Basin Initiative as a move that will strengthen America's trade presence in those areas and urged swift Senate action on the Conference Report followed by President Clinton's signature.
"Opening more markets to American goods is crucial if we are to create good jobs and continue our economic expansion," said Thomas Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. "This legislation will encourage greater two-way commerce between U.S. businesses and potential trading partners. It encourages economic reform while offering a hand-up rather than a hand-out."
The Chamber is optimistic that today's House action will swing more "undecided" members in favor of the important trade vote still to come – the trade agreement with China and Permanent Normal Trade Relations.
"The growing numbers of announced supporters for PNTR for China reflect the influence of reasoned debate over colorful rhetoric. Trade is good for U.S. businesses, good for our workers, good for the economy," said Donohue. "Congress must not turn its back on the more than a billion Chinese people who are welcoming a greater U.S. presence in their country. We don't just export goods – we export democratic ideals."
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
