Chamber Urges Stronger U.S.-Chile Ties
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Chamber of Commerce today released its publication, Faces of Trade with Chile: Small Business Success Stories. Published in concert with AmCham Chile, the book outlines the benefits American small businesses can gain through passage of U.S.-Chile free trade agreement.
"Just as small businesses are a driving force in the U.S. economy, small businesses showcase the advantages of a strong U.S.-Chile trading relationship," said Leslie Schweitzer, Chamber senior trade advisor. "This book highlights the success story of American businesses in Chile and the number of jobs created here in the U.S. The U.S.-Chile free trade agreement will strengthen the relationship between our countries and create new, mutually beneficial opportunities for American and Chilean businesses."
Chile is currently the 6th largest market for U.S. exports in Latin America, while the U.S. is the largest export market for Chilean products. Trade between the two countries surpassed $6 billion in 2002. Passage of the U.S.-Chile FTA will advance U.S. interests by eliminating trade barriers, protecting U.S. investment and intellectual property rights and raising the bar for the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
The Faces of Trade book was unveiled at a conference the Chamber hosted in Philadelphia. The Port of Philadelphia is a leading hub of trade between the U.S. and Chile. In addition to several lawmakers, business leaders and policy experts who spoke at the event, Chilean Ambassador Andrés Bianchi was among those to address the conference.
"The Chamber is at the forefront of promoting bilateral trade agreements to increase jobs and opportunities for American businesses and workers," Schweitzer said. "We look forward to working with officials of the U.S. and Chilean governments to implement a beneficial agreement."
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region
