Chamber Supports Homeland Security Pick

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Chamber of Commerce gave its support to Michael Chertoff, President Bush's choice to lead the nation's homeland security agency and welcomed his efforts to help secure the nation.

"The most important function of the federal government is to protect and defend the American people and our way of life," said Thomas Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. "Economic security is also a crucial part of homeland security and the new Secretary must help to ensure that that the free flow of goods, services and people – the very assets we are working to protect – continues without disruption."

The Chamber supports the administration's plan to streamline homeland security resources and federal activities that directly relate to the ongoing commerce of our nation, including immigration, transportation, trade and infrastructure protection.

"We must continue to make sure that the department continues to protect the nation while not stifling the American economy," Donohue continued. "A continued partnership between the federal government and the business community is vital, if we are to achieve the best results and heighten security."

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
