Chamber Calls for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Chamber of Commerce today joined religious, political, labor and immigration advocates to urge Congress to move forward on comprehensive immigration reform.

"America's current immigration system is hopelessly broken and fails employers and the nation as a whole," said Bruce Josten, Chamber executive vice president. "In order to help sustain our economy and boost national security, America needs an efficient and predictable immigration system."

In a press conference today, Josten said the Chamber is urging the federal government to pass a comprehensive immigration reform package that allows current undocumented workers to earn legal status. He also said the Chamber is calling for the government to address potential worker shortfalls by providing a structured mechanism for employers to fill jobs when American workers are unavailable. The Chamber is also urging lawmakers to adopt immigration reform measures that work seamlessly to ensure U.S. national and economic security.

"Immigration issues have always been complex, but our nation's safety and financial viability depends on the answer," Josten said. "It is time for the administration and Congress to grapple with these difficult questions and move forward with real solutions."
