Chamber Praises Miers as Good Pick for Supreme Court

 

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The United States Chamber of Commerce praised President George W. Bush’s nomination of White House counsel Harriet Miers to the seat being vacated by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
 
 “The president’s nomination of Harriet Miers is a good pick for the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue. “She has a reputation of getting things done and her diverse experience at the state and federal levels will be essential in guiding the court on an array of business and other issues.” 

 

 The Chamber has had a formal policy on evaluating Supreme Court nominees since 1987, including endorsements of Associate Justices Breyer, Ginsburg, Souter, Thomas, and Roberts.  It assesses candidates based on legal scholarship and the understanding of essential business issues.  The board of directors then makes the final determination of an endorsement. 

 

“As the Chamber has for nearly 20 years, we will conduct a thorough review of the president’s nominee based on her skills, intellect, open-mindedness and judicial temperament,” said Donohue.  “Our goal is to ensure that the seat is filled by a fair and just steward of the nation’s highest Court.”

 

The Chamber looks forward to the exchange between the nominee and the Senate and will participate in the process as appropriate.
