Chamber Praises Timely Nomination of Samuel Alito as Supreme Court Associate Justice

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The United States Chamber of Commerce praised President Bush for his timely nomination of Samuel Alito to replace Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

"It was crucial that a new nominee be named quickly so that the Senate can move forward with confirming a new justice, and Judge Alito is a well-qualified nominee for the High Court," said Thomas J. Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. "Alito has experience arguing before the Supreme Court, he has authored more than 700 judicial opinions as an appellate court judge and he has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate twice. We look forward to performing our review of Judge Alito's credentials, and at the same time, we urge the Senate to expedite their confirmation process."

The Chamber has had a formal policy on endorsing Supreme Court nominees since 1987, which it has followed in its endorsements of Associate Justices Breyer, Ginsburg, Souter and Thomas. The Supreme Court has an enormous impact on the way America does business, making it extraordinarily important that the Chamber weigh in with its views on court proceedings.

The Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
