U.S. Chamber Joins Kickoff of National Preparedness Month
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The United States Chamber of Commerce joins the Department of Homeland Security today for the launch of National Preparedness Month to highlight the importance of emergency preparedness.
"The private sector plays an incredibly important role in the strength and security of our nation," said Andrew Howell, Chamber vice president of homeland security policy. "Hurricane Katrina reminds us that when businesses and their employees are prepared to survive and recover, the nation and our economy are more secure. Having an emergency plan helps protect a company's assets and employees during any type of incident that can affect a firm's operations."
Throughout the month, the Department of Homeland Security and the American Red Cross will work with local, state, and federal government organizations and the private sector to highlight the importance of emergency preparedness. The U.S. Chamber has joined with more than 150 public and private organizations to participate in the National Preparedness Month Coalition to help members host events and sponsor activities that circulate emergency preparedness information and encourage action.
The U.S. Chamber is encouraging business owners to take appropriate steps to confront the realities of running a company in the post September 11 environment. The threat of an emergency—ranging from a devastating hurricane or fire to a terrorist attack—makes it essential that homes, businesses and schools are prepared for all hazards.
"The speed at which a company can get back to business after a disaster depends on emergency preparation," Howell added. "Planning ahead will improve the likelihood that our members' companies will survive and prosper should the unthinkable occur."
The U.S. Chamber is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
