Chamber Praises New Trade Representative Nominee

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The United States Chamber of Commerce gave its strong support to Ambassador Susan C. Schwab, President Bush's choice to negotiate international trade deals and help American businesses compete in the global marketplace.

"At a time when the global trading system needs a tune up, Sue Schwab has the knowledge and experience to get under the hood and get the engine running smoothly," said Chamber President and CEO Tom Donohue. "This is a critical year for the trade agenda, with the global Doha negotiations in their final stretch and critical free trade agreements in the pipeline. Schwab can make sure the U.S. doesn't miss a beat at the negotiating table as Rob Portman moves on."

The Chamber has been working closely with USTR on agreements to open overseas markets for American exporters, crack down on counterfeiting and piracy around the world, and ensure that other countries live up to their obligations under trade agreements.

In addition to free trade deals with Colombia, Korea, Malaysia, Oman, and Peru, the Chamber's top priorities this year include a successful conclusion of the Doha Development Agenda negotiations. The Chamber has also hired staff resources on the ground in China, Brazil, and other key markets to fight counterfeiting and piracy worldwide.

"Trade is a powerful driver for the global economy, and America's trading companies are the cornerstone of our future success," said Donohue. "A quarter of a million small companies are exporting today, and USTR's work to open foreign markets is indispensable."
