U.S. Chamber Applauds Cannon Win in Utah House Race

WASHINGTON, D.C.-The United States Chamber of Commerce today applauded Rep. Chris Cannon's victory over developer John Jacob in Utah's 3rd Congressional District, calling it an important endorsement of sensible immigration reform policies and a rejection of anti-immigrant sentiment that could dramatically harm our economy and undermine the nation's values.

"The Chamber led the business community's effort to support Cannon and counter misinformation by third-party anti-immigration groups," said Chamber Vice President and Political Director Bill Miller. "Chris Cannon's win is a victory for the business community and helps advance the President's call for a more comprehensive reform of our immigration system."

The Chamber undertook a targeted voter education program that included tens of thousands of pieces of direct mail and phone calls, as well as placing staff on the ground. The Chamber's goal was to counter third-party attack ads against Cannon designed to mislead and confuse voters by focusing on Cannon's strong support for the pro-business agenda.

"The Chamber has a responsibility to support candidates who stand by their pro-business beliefs in key elections that significantly impact the business community. Chris Cannon stood by his beliefs on immigration reform and the Chamber was eager to support his reelection," said Miller.

The U.S. Chamber supports a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill that would improve security and border enforcement, allow employers to fill jobs when American workers are unavailable, create a new temporary worker program, and develop a process for undocumented workers to qualify for legal work status following security and background checks and paying a fine, among other provisions.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector and region.
