U.S. Chamber BCLC Calls for Nominations for Inaugural "Siemens Sustainable Community Prizes"
Washington, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) today announced a new recognition program that rewards communities for their proficiency in economic planning, ability to attract new business, and capability to successfully take on 21st century challenges like environmental stewardship. The "Siemens Sustainable Community Prizes" will recognize governments, chambers of commerce, convention bureaus, economic development authorities, and similar organizations.
"Many communities manage their growth and development with a dual focus on environmental stewardship and economic competitiveness," said BCLC Executive Director Stephen Jordan. "BCLC and Siemens have partnered to bring national attention to this innovative approach to sustainable development."
To be eligible for the Siemens Sustainable Community Prizes, communities must demonstrate several characteristics of a sustainable community. These requirements include partnership and stakeholder involvement, as well as demonstrable improvements to the local environment, business community, and quality of life.
Three prizes will be awarded to communities in the small, midsize, and large categories. Nominations will be accepted until February 29, 2008. Community-based coalitions and local agencies are encouraged to submit their work.
A select committee of external experts will review the submissions and determine three finalists from each category. The judging panel will consist of thought leaders with backgrounds in environment, business, academics, government, and economic development.
The three winning communities will be announced on April 28, 2008, at BCLC's National Conference on Corporate Community Investment in Anaheim, California.
