Presents 2008 State Leadership Award to John Suthers

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) today presented the 2008 State Leadership Award to John Suthers for his exceptional contributions as Colorado's Attorney General, a member of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), and a leader in the state attorney general community. According to ILR, Suthers has been a voice of balance and reason on issues related to state attorney general involvement in civil and criminal litigation.

"Attorney General Suthers has provided steady, thoughtful leadership throughout his career, and he continues to be a valuable source of guidance to attorneys general around the country," said ILR President Lisa Rickard.

Suthers was appointed Attorney General of Colorado in 2005 and was elected to a four- year term in 2006. During his tenure, Attorney General Suthers has initiated successful programs to protect children from Internet predators and to reduce mortgage and foreclosure fraud. He also currently serves as co-chair of the NAAG Criminal Law Committee and as a member of the U.S. Attorney General's Executive Working Group.

The author of five books, Attorney General Suthers recently released "No Higher Calling, No Greater Responsibility: A Prosecutor Makes his Case," a book about his experiences as Attorney General, a prosecutor and a private lawyer. The work, which discusses the appropriate role of criminal law and prosecutors in society, includes chapters on a number of legal topics, including jury reform, professional ethics, the media and mandatory sentencing.

Attorney General Suthers received the award at ILR's 9th Annual Legal Reform Summit, which brought together the nation's leading legal reform experts to discuss the problems in the civil justice system and solutions to fix them.

ILR seeks to promote civil justice reform through legislative, political, judicial, and educational activities at the national, state, and local levels.
