Chamber Welcomes U.S.-Chinese Dialogue
Calls it Important to Long-Term Cooperation and Global Prosperity
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today expressed its strong support for the first meeting of the U.S.-China Strategic & Economic Dialogue.
"We applaud President Obama and Secretaries Clinton and Geithner for their leadership in advancing the U.S. relationship with China," Chamber Senior Vice President for International Affairs Myron Brilliant said. "Today's global challenges can't be addressed by either country alone; they require collaborative efforts to achieve progress. This dialogue is a critical mechanism to develop solutions and to promote trust between the two countries."
The Chamber said this dialogue is a good step toward the October meeting of the Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade where the two sides can achieve tangible progress in reducing trade and investment protectionism and curtailing industrial policies. This dialogue also sets forth a program of work to promote lasting economic recovery and a clean and secure energy future. Both sides have agreed to measure progress in addressing challenges critical to the long-term health of U.S.-China relations and global prosperity.
"The Memorandum of Understanding signed today at the dialogue, coupled with the recent visits to China by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Energy Secretary Steven Chu, demonstrate opportunities to build a partnership that advances cooperation on critical policies, joint research and development, and public-private collaboration in areas such as clean coal technology, energy efficiency, and conservation," said Brilliant.
Brilliant urged the continuation of a results-oriented dialogue with China. "The U.S. Chamber stands ready to work with both U.S. and Chinese officials on the shared opportunities to tackle the financial crisis, energy security, and climate change," he said.
The U.S. Chamber is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
