U.S. Chamber Honors Governor Riley's Dedication to Promoting Trade in Alabama

Exports Continue to Drive Growth and Job Creation Across the State

MONTGOMERY, AL—At a press conference in the state capitol today, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce honored Alabama Governor Bob Riley with its highly distinguished TradeRoots International Leadership Award for his inspired advocacy for Alabama's exporters.

"When we joined forces with Governor Riley and the Alabama Development Office in 2004 to launch the Export Alabama Initiative—we all shared the vision that international trade is critical to the state's economy," said Leslie Schweitzer, the U.S. Chamber's senior trade advisor, who presented the award today. "Now five years later, that vision has resulted in new and better jobs, increased competitiveness, and a dramatic increase in Alabama's exports. It is the most successful governor-led trade education program in the country and we are proud to be part of it."

Alabama exports have shot up nearly 75% between 2002 and 2007 and another 10% in 2008. They currently support nearly 300,000 manufacturing jobs and another 6,800 in agriculture. The Governor recently announced the value of Alabama-produced exports reached $15.8 billion last year.

"The continued establishment of overseas business and educational alliances by Alabama will be critical for the state to remain competitive in this global economy," said Governor Riley. "The consistent annual increases in exports show that there is great demand for Alabama products in other countries, as well as potential for further growth."

The U.S. Chamber is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
