U.S. Chamber's BCLC Report Unveils Steps for Community Disaster Resiliency

Conference Call Offers First Glimpse of Collection of Resiliency Articles by Leading Business, NGO, and Government Officials

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) today hosted a national conference call to discuss the BCLC Disaster Assistance and Recovery Program's new report, Controlling our Own Destiny: Proactive Steps for Resilient Communities. The report is a compilation of lessons learned and successful practices from experienced disaster managers from the business, nonprofit, emergency management, and government sectors.

BCLC's report catalogs the latest thinking in making our communities more resilient to the risks they face every day. Lessons from this report will help us move from a nation that is reactive to disasters to one that is proactive and able to better manage our own destiny.

"Disaster recovery is a complicated process that adversely affects the entire fabric of a community," said BCLC Manager Gerald McSwiggan. "But by building resiliency, implementing effective response systems, and helping communities build back better than before, the process can be successful."

Speakers on the call included Michael Gallis, Principal of Michael Gallis & Associates, Ken Sternard, President of the UPS Foundation, and Gerald McSwiggan, Manager of BCLC's Disaster Assistance and Recovery Program.

BCLC is a 501(c) 3 affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and manages the U.S. Chamber's Disaster Assistance and Recovery program. BCLC is a resource and voice for businesses and their social and philanthropic interests.
