U.S. Chamber Commends Bipartisan Policy Center’s 'Valuable Contribution' To Deficit Reduction Debate
Business Will Play Constructive Role in Devising Workable Solutions
WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Marty Regalia issued the following statement on the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC’s) deficit reduction report, “Restoring America’s Future”:
“We commend the BPC’s valuable contribution to the deficit reduction debate and thank co-chairs Senator Pete Domenici and Director Alice Rivlin—and members of the Deficit Reduction Task Force—for their leadership. The report, along with the recommendations made by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson of the President’s Deficit Commission, is a powerful reminder of three things: the tremendous harm we are inflicting on our economy by failing to get the deficit under control; the unconscionable burden we are passing on to future generations; and that practical solutions can be found when public leaders work together on a bipartisan basis and with the long-term interests of the country in mind.
“The U.S. Chamber is encouraging the entire business community not just to calculate the cost of specific deficit reduction proposals to their individual companies, but to weigh the long-term costs to our country, our economy, and future generations if we fail to act. All solutions will require shared sacrifices and we must be prepared to make them.
“The U.S. Chamber is committed to leading the business community in playing a constructive role in addressing the nation’s deficit and debt crisis. The alternative is the bankruptcy of our country and our future.”
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
