U.S. Chamber Statement on the Expected Confirmation of John McConnell for Federal District Judge

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued the following statement on the Senate’s upcoming vote, which is expected to confirm John J. “Jack” McConnell for a judgeship on the U.S. District Court in Rhode Island:

“The confirmation of John McConnell for federal district judge marks a disappointing chapter in the Senate’s duty to give 'advice and consent' for federal judicial nominees.

“Federal judges should exhibit impartiality, honesty, and be fully qualified to serve in this special role charged with upholding justice. Unfortunately, Mr. McConnell’s fairness, ethics, and qualifications have all been called into serious doubt throughout his confirmation process.

“Even with a confirmation, the business community continues to have serious concerns about his elevation to a lifetime appointment. We do not believe Mr. McConnell’s nomination marks the end of the story. We will closely watch his actions on the federal bench going forward and will not be dissuaded from raising concerns should they arise.”
