U.S. Chamber Announces 2nd Annual Hiring Our Heroes Award Winners
Hiring Our Heroes Also Welcomes Four New Members to Chamber’s Veterans Employment Advisory Council
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its National Chamber Foundation announced that Comcast/NBCUniversal, VSE Corporation, Prudential, Booz Allen Hamilton, and the National Military Family Association received top honors at the 2nd Annual Lee Anderson Hiring Our Heroes Awards Dinner last night at the Chamber. The winners were chosen in five categories that recognized employers that have gone above and beyond to honor the sacrifices made by our nation’s military families.
“These five employers have demonstrated a strong commitment to preparing, employing, and advancing talented veterans and military spouses,” said Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel (Ret.), executive director of the Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes program. “They are companies that are leading the way in the national effort to impact veteran and military spouse unemployment across America.”
The Chamber presented awards in the following categories:
Lee Anderson Veteran and Military Spouse Employment Award—Comcast/NBCUniversal received this award for demonstrated leadership in hiring veterans and military spouses and honoring the sacrifices they have made in service to our nation. Other finalists were Goldman Sachs; Sears; United Services Automobile Association (USAA); and Walmart.
Don Weber Wounded Warrior Employment Award—VSE Corporation received this award for demonstrated leadership in addressing the unique challenges and demands for wounded warriors, spouses, and caregivers in their search for meaningful employment. Other finalists were CACI; Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC); Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI); and Southwest Airlines.
Post-9/11 Veteran Employment Award—Prudential received this award for demonstrated leadership in enhancing the ability of post-9/11 veterans to find meaningful employment in the private sector. Other finalists were Chesapeake Energy; GE; JPMorgan Chase & Co.; and Ryder.
Military Spouse Employment and Mentoring Award—Booz Allen Hamilton received this award for demonstrated leadership in supporting military spouses in their search for meaningful employment in the private sector. Other finalists were Capital One; Hospital Corporation of America (HCA); Hunt Companies; and The Major Group.
Capital One Award for Small Business Veteran and Military Spouse Employment—The National Military Family Association received this award for demonstrated leadership in hiring veterans and military spouses and honoring the sacrifices they have made in service to our nation. Other finalists were Aaron’s, Inc.; Meineke Car Care Center of Pensacola, Florida; Wills Bros T&D Services; and Wittenberg Weiner Consulting, LLC.
Non-profits and service agencies working in veteran and military spouse unemployment nominated each finalist, and a peer committee of veterans and military spouses selected the winners.
Additionally, Hiring Our Heroes presented Army veteran and GE Program Manager for Veterans’ Initiatives Kris Urbauer with the inaugural Colonel Michael Endres Leadership Award. Endres was the Director of the Military Service Initiative at the President George W. Bush Institute. The Chamber created this award in his memory to honor his lifetime leading soldiers and honorable service to his country.
At the dinner, Hiring Our Heroes announced the addition of First Command, Fluor, SunTrust, and USAA as the newest members of the Chamber’s Veterans Employment Advisory Council (VEAC). The VEAC is comprised of more than 30 of America’s largest employers representing every major industry.

In March 2011, the Chamber, in conjunction with the National Chamber Foundation, launched Hiring Our Heroes, a nationwide effort to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. The Chamber started the program to improve public-private sector coordination in local communities, where veterans and their families are returning every day. To date, Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 360 hiring fairs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, helping 14,100 veterans and military spouses find employment.
