In Your Corner: Be a Voice for Business
A Gratifying Year Comes to an End
As my year as chairman of the U.S. Chamber concludes, I think back to why I accepted this volunteer position-to be a strong voice for business during a time when America's competitive position in the world is being challenged like never before. I wanted to use my role with the Chamber to influence the national debate over taxes, regulations, health care, energy, and education and to enlist my fellow businesspeople in the Chamber's fight for a friendlier business environment.
Much to my delight, I found thousands of voices for business wherever I traveled on behalf of the Chamber. From Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Dayton, Ohio, from St. Augustine, Florida, to Robinsonville, Mississippi, I encountered small business owners and corporate executives who recognize that one of the smartest business decisions they ever made was to become a business advocate and help shape public policy. Their enthusiasm and commitment inspired me.
While everyone who runs a business understands the difficulty of meeting payroll, paying taxes, and providing health coverage, many of our elected representatives don't appreciate the constant struggle for business success. It's up to each one of us to make sure they do.
Make a conscious decision to be your own best advocate, whether by becoming active in your local chamber and the U.S. Chamber, running for a seat on the city council, or contacting your elected representatives about issues important to your business.
