In Your Corner: Reflecting on a Decade of Service

Chamber Members Drive Success

 
Ten years ago this month, I returned to the U.S. Chamber as president and CEO after working for the organization in the 1970s and 1980s. I've been fortunate to lead the Chamber during a period of substantial growth and success. Class action reform, major tax cuts, business victories in the courts, and the passage of important trade, energy, education, and transportation measures are a few of the landmark achievements that come to mind.
 
Examining the past is a useful exercise only if it helps you position yourself for future success. So what must the Chamber do to further expand its influence and effectiveness on behalf of American businesses?
 
It's all about people.
 
The Chamber has succeeded because it has attracted a world-class staff of lobbyists, policy experts, and communicators. We must continue to hire the best and the brightest.
 
And we have succeeded because of the commitment and activism of our members. Elected officials and regulators listen to us because they hear from you. Phone calls, e-mails, faxes, and visits from legions of our small and large company members have made all the difference. In an increasingly turbulent political and legislative environment, the Chamber must strengthen its grassroots network of business activists.
 
I tip my hat to all Chamber members who take time out of their busy schedules to weigh in on the issues that impact their businesses. With your continued support, the next 10 years can be even better than the last 10.
