Hiring Our Heroes Revolutionizes Job Fairs
Tesla made news recently, but it wasn't for their cool-sounding gigafactory.
It's for their dedication to hiring veterans. The San Jose Mercury News has more:
"We want to be known throughout the veteran community as a great place to work," Arnnon Geshuri, Tesla's vice president of human resources, said in an interview. "Veterans are a great source of talent for Tesla, and we're going after it...."
The company now has more than 6,000 employees, and of those, 300 -- or roughly 5 percent -- are veterans...An additional 600 veteran candidates are in the hiring pipeline, according to Geshuri.
Veterans are a good fit for Tesla because many gained advanced technical, electrical and mechanical skills while serving in the military -- skills applicable to making electric cars. They are also accustomed to working as part of tightly-knit groups.
Greg Reichow, Tesla's vice president of production, says the company is eager to hire veterans because they've found them to be excellent employees who share the company's sense of mission.
"At Tesla we're not just building cars. We're trying to transform transportation," Reichow said. "They also know how to lead teams, focus teams and function on teams, and they have incredible integrity and discipline."
While Tesla is transforming transportation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's Hiring Our Heroes is about to transform career fairs - virtually.
Hiring Our Heroes is launching Virtual Job Scout, a fresh take on the virtual career fair. This online platform gathers all the resources and opportunities of a live hiring event, and connects employers with top veteran, transitioning member, and military spouse candidates in real time, through live events or on your own time.
Employers get access to an extensive pool of diverse and qualified candidates, can connect with prospective applicants all over the U.S. without having to travel to a physical job fair, and can create unlimited job listings at no cost, thanks to the generosity and partnership of the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation.
For jobseekers, the virtual career fair is a great way to meet and interact with employers across the country when there isn't an opportunity to attend a physical event. They can browse job postings, apply online, and chat with recruiters in real time. The virtual career fair is open all the time, and even when an employer is not "staffing their booth", prospective applicants can still send the recruiters direct emails in each booth.
Business leaders are already touting this latest effort: "This is a great idea. Hiring our Heroes has been a big success at Rockwell Automation - especially in educating our hiring manager population on how easy it is to translate military-to-public companies. Look forward to learning more about the details," said Scott Nichols, Engineering Recruiter at Rockwell Automation, via LinkedIn.
