Faces of Trade: Jim Heimer, National Pork Producers Council

Heimerl Farms is a highly dedicated, family run farming operation located 20 minutes northeast of Columbus in Johnstown, Ohio. The farm’s mission is to promote agriculture through strong family values, superior animal care, sound environmental stewardship, active community relations and solid financial decisions to provide a future for the family farm, its team of employees and partners. Widely known for its pork production operation, Heimerl Farms also includes crops, cattle, a feed processing facility and a trucking division. The ability to trade internationally is critical to pork producers, including Heimerl Farmers.

Last year, for example, they added more than $50 to the price every hog farmer received for each pig marketed. Additionally, one in every four hogs is exported, so a great deal of our business depends on access to markets around the world. Free trade agreements help to open those markets and ensure that we are competing on a level playing field. Take NAFTA, for example. Canada and Mexico are major markets for American agriculture and we need to maintain the benefits of NAFTA for farmers and ranchers as we seek to modernize the agreement. Without NAFTA, we would lose our ability to effectively compete in two of our largest export markets.

Jim and Kathy Heimerl run the farm where they raised four children. Their three sons – Matt, Brad and Jeff – continue to work the farm today. Jim serves in a variety of Ohio agriculture leadership positions, including board seats with the Ohio Soybean Association and the Hartford Fair, and previously served as president of the Ohio Pork Producers Council. Currently, he is president-elect of the National Pork Producers Council.
