Dear Representatives McNerney and Meadows:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Technology Engagement Center (C_TEC) welcomes your leadership in introducing H.R. 2575, the “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Government Act of 2019.” This bipartisan and bicameral legislation marks a meaningful step towards bringing the benefits of AI to the federal government and maintaining U.S. AI leadership.

Artificial intelligence is already transforming industries ranging from healthcare to transportation, and will affect businesses of all sizes and sectors. According to a recent McKinsey & Company report, AI is projected to add $13 trillion to global economic activity by 2030. Similarly, AI has the potential to provide significant benefits to governments such as improving the delivery of government services and enabling more efficient government operations.

The AI in Government Act would seek to achieve this potential through establishing an AI Center of Excellence within the General Services Administration to assist agencies in effectively acquiring and using AI technologies. This legislation would also take important steps to ensure the responsible use of AI through requiring agencies to establish AI governance plans to promote innovative uses of AI applications while addressing any consequential risks.

The AI in Government Act would help ensure that the federal government remains on the cutting edge of AI, and it is for this reason C_TEC encourages passage of H.R. 2575.

Sincerely,

Tim Day

Senior Vice President

C_TEC

U.S. Chamber of Commerce
