WASHINGTON, D.C. - Last night, the U.S. Chamber endorsed candidate, Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28), won the Democratic primary election to represent Texas’ Twenty-Eighth Congressional District. Ashlee Rich Stephenson, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Vice President and National Political Director released the following statement after last night’s primary:
“Voters in TX-28 made a clear choice in backing proven leader Henry Cuellar in today’s Democratic primary. Congressman Henry Cuellar has successfully led on behalf of the hardworking men, women and families who reside in his district, by fighting tirelessly for the kind of public policy that creates good-paying jobs and supports the local economy. From leading in helping to pass the USMCA, to standing up against tariffs that would negatively impact Texas, Congressman Cuellar is a resilient public servant who knows what it takes to get things done on behalf of his constituents. We are honored to stand with Henry Cuellar and believe this race sends a clear signal that voters will reject candidates up and down the ticket who seek to impose an extreme, socialism agenda.”
Partnering with the Laredo Chamber of Commerce, Texas Association of Business, and the IBC Bank, the U.S. Chamber hosted an endorsement eventin Laredo in February. The general election will be held on November 3, 2020, where Cuellar will face Republican Sandra Whitten.
The U.S. Chamber had previously engaged in a television issue advocacy program highlighting Cuellar’s work on the United States Mexico Canada Agreement and encouraging him to continue fighting tariffs on the auto industry.
