D.C. Area Tech Company Recognized as Nation’s Most Veteran-Friendly
Small Business; Receives Custom Spot on Spike TV
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program and Spike TV’s Hire A Vet campaign announced today that following weeks of public voting, technology company Troop ID has been named winner of the Small Business Tournament of Veteran Champions. This award recognizes Troop ID’s innovative and demonstrated efforts to help, hire, and retain veterans.
“Troop ID is a prime example of the way small businesses are having a big impact on the lives of veterans and their families,” said Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel (ret.), executive director of Hiring Our Heroes. “Embodying the innovative and responsive nature of small businesses, Troop ID has developed both a smart digital product to help veterans and a creative business model to hire them. We hope that others will be inspired by the high bar they have set, and we congratulate the entire Troop ID team on this well-deserved honor.”
“It is Spike’s honor to salute Troop ID, a thriving small business that recognizes the incredible leadership and abilities our veterans bring to the job marketplace,” said Niels Schuurmans, Executive Vice President, Brand Marketing and Creative, Spike TV.
As tournament champion, Troop ID will receive a free custom-made spot, which will be produced and aired by Spike TV. Co-founders Blake Hall and Matt Thompson also received an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles where they were honored at the taping of Spike TV Guys’ Choice Awards for the company’s commitment to serving veterans and their families. The awards are scheduled to air tonight on Spike TV at 9:00 p.m. EDT.
“The entire team at Troop ID is honored to receive this award in recognition of our efforts to reward a life of military service through veteran-friendly business practices, and to enable all members of the military community to access benefits online,” said Matt Thompson, Co-Founder of Troop ID and former Army Ranger.
Founded by two Army Rangers who recognized that veterans – unlike active-duty servicemembers – often lack an official ID card proving their military affiliation, the company provides veterans and their families with free digital credentials that can verify military service when accessing employment opportunities, financial resources, VA benefits, and military discounts online. More than 35% of Troop ID employees are veterans, and military spouses comprise the entire local sales team.
A combination of public voting and panel of judges was used to narrow the field down from the Elite Eight quarterfinalists to the Final Four semifinalists. The same format led to the selection of the winner. Judging for the tournament was based on criteria such as innovative recruiting and retention strategies for veterans, veteran community engagement and leadership as well as an ongoing commitment to hire veterans.
Hiring Our Heroes launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s vast network of state and local chambers and other strategic partners from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, the goal is to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day. To date, Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 540 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. More than 18,400 veterans and military spouses have obtained jobs.
Hire A Vet helps veterans prepare for and find jobs. It encourages companies large and small to hire veterans and gives them access to the resources necessary to do so
