U.S. Chamber Applauds Senate Confirmation of Kappos as Under Secretary of Commerce for IP
WASHINGTON, D.C.-The U.S. Chamber of Commerce applauded today's Senate confirmation of David Kappos as Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The Senate confirmed Kappos by unanimous consent.
"A seasoned patent attorney with over twenty years experience in various intellectual property roles, Kappos is an excellent choice in this position," said Mark Esper, executive vice president of the Chamber's Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC). "He brings an impressive resume and a proven track record of success to the job. With an extensive knowledge of the patent system, he brings the necessary leadership to address the current challenges facing intellectual property policy today."
Esper noted that intellectual property is the backbone of America's economy, and a strong, robust patent system and efficient patent office is vital to job creation and our future economic growth. Industries based on IP account for more than $5 trillion of the nation's GDP, drive more than half of all our exports and employ over 18 million Americans.
"The Chamber's Global IP Center looks forward to working with Kappos and supporting his efforts to improve the USPTO and further strengthen IP protection," Esper said.
The Chamber's Global Intellectual Property Center is working around the world to champion IP as vital to creating jobs, saving lives, advancing global economic growth and generating breakthrough solutions to global challenges.
The U.S. Chamber is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
