WASHINGTON, D.C.—This week, the U.S. Chamber Business Civic Leadership Center unveiled the Pakistan Flood Response Map, an interactive website to accomplish real-time, in-depth information sharing to assist companies and humanitarian organizations responding to the massive floods in Pakistan. The map, made possible by a grant from the Abbott Fund, the philanthropic foundation for the global health care company, Abbott, includes data on 450 projects, representing 130 organizations, 80 businesses, and more than one billion dollars in contributions to the Pakistan’s recovery effort.
“The Pakistan Flood Response Map is a valuable tool for seeing where the needs and the responses are,” said U.S. Chamber BCLC Executive Director Stephen Jordan. “It’s helping to sharpen understanding of who is doing what in response to the crisis, and helping us to identify important next steps.”
The web-based tool helps companies find projects matching their interests, resources, and expertise. Users can browse humanitarian projects and organizations by location in Pakistan, the issues they address, and what business sectors relate to them.
One-fifth of Pakistan is underwater today. Affecting 20.4 million people, the water spans a distance equivalent to St. Louis to New Orleans. The number of people affected tallies far higher than the Southeast Asia tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, and the Haiti earthquake combined. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi put damage and loss estimates at $43 billion.
To date, more than $14.2 million in corporate aid has been pledged for Pakistan flood response efforts. BCLC’s Pakistan corporate aid tracker shows 84 companies that have provided assistance, with six offering in-kind or cash assistance each valued at $500,000 or more.
The announcement of the Pakistan Flood Response Map came moments after an address by the foreign minister and Husain Haqqani, Pakistani ambassador to the United States, at BCLC’s annual Global Corporate Citizenship Conference held on September 29 at the U.S. Chamber.
