U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued the following statement today after attending President Donald Trump’s speech on second chance hiring at the White House.

"We stand with the President in supporting efforts to help formerly incarcerated Americans rejoin the workforce, secure good jobs, and build a fulfilling life. These individuals have paid their debt to society and have earned a second shot at their American Dream.

“Our economy has never been stronger, and right now, 7.5 million job openings are waiting for the right person with the right skills and experience. With support and training, formerly incarcerated individuals can fill many of these jobs and reduce the risk that they will return to prison.

“We look forward to working with the White House and Congress to help bridge that gap.”

On Tuesday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation launched America Working Forward: Hidden Workforce, a new project exploring employer-led programs that give inmates and ex-offenders training and support as they re-enter the workforce. The Foundation also hosted America Working Forward Live, an event featuring business leaders, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs building pathways for inmates and ex-offenders to join the workforce.
