U.S. Chamber Strongly Believes Consumers Need to Remain at the Heart of Antitrust Laws

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley issued the following statement in response to today’s House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on online platforms and market power.

“Sadly, for most of today’s hearing consumers took a back seat. Repeatedly, the line of questioning featured a litany of complaints from competitors, but consumers are at the focus of our antitrust laws. No company has a responsibility to help their competitor. In fact, when competitors work together, it harms consumers. This is why real antitrust investigations are not steered by politicized predetermined outcomes, but better left to experts and in-depth economic analysis.

“To be certain, Congress has a responsibility to ensure antitrust laws are enforced and antitrust enforcers need to enforce the law. However, too many antitrust questions heard today either show a lack of understanding of the law or a deeply flawed interest to change it. The Chamber strongly believes consumers need to remain at the heart of our antitrust laws.”
