Steve Stewart, President, Stewart Bros. Drilling Co., Grants, NM

My name's Steve Stewart and I'm the president of Stewart Brothers Drilling Company, based out of Grants, New Mexico, and we're part of the drilling industry the works for mining companies, oil and gas companies, environmental concerns, also the water production.

I think the biggest concerns we have are just the general economic environment that will allow businesses to want to spend money and invest in projects that create jobs and produce long-term economic benefits. We want to be good citizens. We want to comply with the regulations and laws, but it seems like whenever we go to try and meet the requirements something's always changing and there's a new hoop to jump through and a new obstacle. So there's just not kinda certainty that you can meet the requirements and go on and do the business that you need to.

I would love to see more of a mindset change for government in general to where they are really doing things to smooth the way for business instead of making it harder.

We really appreciate our membership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The benefits to us come from the fact the Chamber is so sensitive to the needs and special circumstances of a small business, and also because it is so influential in Washington. So many times we small businesses, we feel like we have no voice at all, and the U.S. Chamber represents well. And we know sometimes the Chamber's unpopular with other powerful interests in Washington and yet they stand up for what they represent. So we appreciate our connections with them and the influence and effect that they have on the government.
