Washington, D.C. — Today, Glenn Spencer, Senior Vice President of Employment Policy Division at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce released the following statement after the Senate introduction of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA):

"The PWFA helps keep valued female employees in the workplace and provides needed clarity in the law for employers. We encourage the Senate and the House to work together to pass this legislation, which is a balanced approach to protecting the rights of pregnant employees and the interests of employers. The U.S. Chamber thanks Senators Casey, Cassidy, Capito, Murkowski, and Shaheen for their leadership on this effort, and we look forward to helping move this bill across the finish line."

In March, the Chamber wrote a letter to lawmakers saying, "this bipartisan compromise would protect the interests of both pregnant employees and their employers." The PWFA would clarify an employer’s obligation to accommodate a pregnant employee or applicant with a known limitation that interferes with her ability to perform some essential functions of her position.
