To the Members of the United States Senate:

As the U.S. Senate considers the nomination of Derek Barrs to be Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce offers the following observations. Mr. Barrs has over 20 years of experience in commercial motor vehicle safety, including roles in law enforcement with the Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Highway Patrol. Throughout his career, Mr. Barrs has demonstrated a clear vision for advancing the safety of commercial motor vehicles traveling on our roadways. We urge the Senate to swiftly consider Mr. Barrs’ nomination and look forward to collaborating with him upon confirmation.

Mr. Barrs’ experience spans working with law enforcement, the trucking industry, and other stakeholders. In addition to his public service with the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol, he has actively worked with commercial motor vehicle stakeholders to advance highway safety. These experiences equip him with the skills and background necessary to effectively advance the important safety mission of the FMCSA.

In his testimony, Mr. Barrs emphasized the critical importance of open and transparent communication between the government and stakeholders, recognizing the significant impact of FMCSA’s actions on the industry as a whole. If confirmed, he pledged to continue strengthening public-private partnerships with the shared goal of enhancing roadway safety and addressing critical safety issues. His leadership will be instrumental in supporting our nation’s workers, travelers, and businesses while tackling long-term challenges.

The Chamber believes we can reduce regulatory burdens while promoting safety in the trucking industry, and we look forward to working with Mr. Barrs to advance these shared priorities.

Sincerely,

Neil L. Bradley
