WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Energy Institute (GEI) welcomes the addition of Ruth Demeter to the staff as Senior Director of Policy.
Demeter is a government affairs professional with over a decade of experience in regulatory and energy policy. She previously worked both in the United States Senate for Senators John Barrasso (WY) and John Ensign (NV), and in the private sector for Peabody Energy.
“We’re excited to add Ruth to our team of established policy experts,” said Marty Durbin, president of the U.S. Chamber’s Global Energy Institute. “GEI has established itself as the pre-eminent group in Washington covering a diverse array of energy and environmental issues across every sector, and Ruth will help further enhance our work with her experience and knowledge of the Hill and regulatory agencies.”

In 2020, Demeter was appointed by the U.S. Department of Energy to serve on the National Coal Council, a federal advisory committee to the Secretary. She also previously served on the leadership board of the Carbon Utilization Research Council.
At GEI, Demeter will add to GEI’s existing lobbying team, in addition to working on mining and Endangered Species Act issues.
Demeter holds a BA in political science and religious studies from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and a JD from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.
