From agricultural regulations to unexpected medical bills and tax relief, federal policy debates are important for many Iowans. Policymakers in Congress have introduced legislation to address these challenges and support rural communities, strengthen economic opportunity, and reduce burdens on families and businesses.
These issues are highlighted in a new U.S. Chamber of Commerce advertisement, “Protecting Iowa,” whichhighlights policy proposals affecting Iowa’s agricultural sector, health care affordability, and economic competitiveness.
Protecting Iowa Farmers
Agricultural producers continue to face significant regulatory and market challenges. One issue under discussion is California’s Proposition 12, which establishes animal housing standards for pork sold within the state, including pork produced elsewhere.
In July 2025, Rep. Ashley Hinson introduced the “Save Our Bacon Act,” in response to Proposition 12, to prevent states such as California from imposing production standards on farmers in other parts of the country. Supporters argue the proposal would reduce regulatory uncertainty and compliance costs for pork producers,
Addressing Surprise Medical Bills
Unexpected medical costs, including those following childbirth, can create significant financial challenges for families. In July 2026, Rep. Hinson helped introduce bipartisan legislation known as the “No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act” to address coverage gaps that may arise when newborns are added to a family's health insurance plan.
The proposed legislation would automatically cover newborns under their mothers’ health insurance plans for 30 days, provide additional time for enrollment, and require insurers to notify parents about certain uncovered medical bills. Supporters contend that these changes would help reduce administrative hurdles and unexpected costs for new parents.
Providing Tax Relief for Workers and Seniors
Federal tax policy continues to be an important issue for workers, families, and retirees.
Signed into law in July 2025, H.R. 1 created new federal income tax deductions for qualified tips and overtime pay, providing additional tax relief for eligible workers.
The law also established an additional deduction for eligible Americans age 65 and older, providing tax relief while maintaining the existing tax treatment of Social Security benefits. Supporters of these provisions argue that they help workers keep more of their earnings and provide meaningful tax relief for seniors living on fixed incomes. Rep. Hinson also voted in favor of H.R. 1.
Highlighting Iowa’s Priorities
Together, these legislative efforts address issues affecting Iowa households and businesses, from agricultural production and health care expenses to the taxes paid by workers and seniors.
The U.S. Chamber’s “Protecting Iowa” campaign highlights these policy initiatives and urges Rep. Hinson to continue supporting legislation like H.R. 4673 to protect Iowa’s farmers and families.
