WASHINGTON, D.C. — Marty Durbin, president of the U.S. Chamber’s Global Energy Institute, issued the following statement today after the White House announced revisions to Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards:

“The U.S. Chamber has long advocated for vehicle mileage and emissions standards that align with real-world circumstances, and we are encouraged by the Administration’s proposed changes. The CAFE standards now under revision were widely viewed as unachievable as they failed to account for inadequate market demand, infrastructure development, and vehicle affordability.”

“While continued improvements to fuel economy remain a priority, the current standard makes new vehicles less affordable and keeps older, less efficient vehicles with fewer safety features on the road longer. The Trump Administration’s proposal puts the focus back on consumer choice and affordability and will benefit manufacturers and consumers alike. We look forward to providing more detailed feedback in the weeks ahead.”
